06/13/08. Era un gran éxito
de audiencia incluso antes de su debut en 2006 en el
Disney Channel y su secuela también atrajo una
audiencia de 17.2 millones de espectadores, que lo convirtió
en el programa de televisión por cable más
visto en 2007. Ahora, la comedia musical televisiva,
“High School Musical”, llega al condado
de Orange en forma de espectáculo musical en
gira.
Esta versión en vivo de la película hecha
para televisión por cable, originalmente dirigida
por Kenny Ortega, cuenta la historia de Gabriella y
Troy quienes descubren que comparten una pasión
por cantar. Cuando los dos se apuntan para participar
en el musical escolar, alborotan a sus colegas amenazando
el rígido orden social de la escuela East High.
Desde su debut en Atlanta a principios de 2007, el show
ha viajado a más de 30 ciudades, incluido el
Teatro Kodak en Los Ángeles. El espectáculo
se dejará ver en el condado de Orange del 17
al 22 de junio. Actores de todo el país componen
el elenco de estudiantes de la escuela preparatoria
hablando de temas como la popularidad y el valor de
los amigos y la familia. Excélsior tuvo la oportunidad
de platicar con dos miembros del elenco que comparten
una conexión con el condado de Orange. Michael
Mahany es nativo de Orange y asistió a la escuela
preparatoria El Modena, interpreta a Jack Scott, un
nuevo personaje que fue escrito específicamente
para esta producción y hace las veces de narrador.
Lizzie Weiss, se licenció en teatro en la Universidad
de California en Irvine e interpreta a la muy inteligente
y loca por el hip hop Martha Cox.
Conoce a Jack Scott
¿Qué te atrajo al personaje Jack Scott?
Lo que me gustó más del personaje es que
Scott es el locutor de radio de la escuela y durante
mi niñez siempre escuchaba las estaciones de
radio locales en Los Ángeles y pues siempre quería
ser un locutor de radio. Cuando leí que Scott
era locutor, me atrajo mucho el papel.
¿Como describirías tú papel?
Scott es un chico interesante. No es el chico más
popular de la escuela, pero tampoco acaba de encajar
en ninguno de los tres grupos principales. Es amigo
de todos, pero al mismo tiempo no es amigo de nadie.
¿Sientes una conexión con el mensaje principal
de “High School Musical”?
Se parece mucho a la experiencia que tuve en la preparatoria.
El teatro no es precisamente lo mas “cool”
cuando eres adolescente, pero tienes que hacer lo que
tienes que hacer y no dejas que las opiniones de otros
te impidan ser tú mismo.
¿Andas emocionado de regresar al condado de Orange?
Es una experiencia increíble porque durante mi
niñez iba al Orange County Performing Artscenter
a ver los shows y pensaba que a lo mejor un día
tendría la oportunidad de actuar en ese escenario.
Conoce a Martha Cox
¿Que te motivó a presentarte a la prueba
para este papel?
Estaba viviendo en la ciudad de Nueva York y mis sobrinos,
que entonces tenían nueve y cinco años,
me dijeron que les encantaba “High School Musical”.
Me presenté a las audiciones y me llamaron para
una segunda audición y obtuve el papel.
¿Como describirías a Martha Cox?
Es un cerebrito. Se supone que debe quedarse con todos
sus amigos y estudiar para el decatlón de ciencias,
pero en realidad tiene una pasión por el hip
hop. Es una estudiante dedicada, pero tiene un aspecto
escondido en lo que se refiere al hip hop.
La moraleja de HSM dice que no tienes que simplemente
ser lo que “se supone” que debes ser. ¿Te
identificas con este tema?
Es interesante porque cuando estaba en la preparatoria
definitivamente no tuve la misma experiencia porque
siempre estaba actuando pero a pesar de eso siempre
estaba en las clases avanzadas. No hay ninguna razón
por la que un estudiante solo deba hacer una sola cosa.
Eres una actriz y te gusta el teatro. ¿Tienes
algunos aspectos escondidos?
Me gusta actuar, pero por otro lado me gusta la fotografía
y el diseño web.

06/13/08. It was
a ratings blockbuster even before it premiered
in 2006 on the Disney Channel and its
sequel also drew an audience of 17.2 million
viewers, which made it the most watched
basic cable program ever, in 2007. Now
the television musical comedy, “High
School Musical”, comes to Orange
County as a touring stage show.
This live version of the made for cable
television movie, originally directed
by Kenny Ortega, tells the story of Gabriella
and Troy who discover they share a passion
for singing. When the two sign up for
the school musical, it sends their peers
into an uproar for threatening to ruin
East High’s rigid social order.
Since its debut in Atlanta in early 2007,
the show has traveled to more than 30
cities, including the Kodak Theatre in
Los Angeles. The show will make its Orange
County stop from June 17-22. Actors from
all across the country make up the cast
of high schoolers struggling with issues
of popularity and the value of friends
and family. Excelsior had the chance to
speak with two cast members who share
a connection with Orange County. Michael
Mahany, a native of Orange who attended
El Modena High School, plays Jack Scott,
a new character written specifically for
the stage production and acts as the narrator.
Lizzie Weiss, who earned her Bachelor’s
in theater from University of California,
Irvine, plays “Martha Cox”,
the brainiac with a secret passion for
hip hop.

Jack Scott
What attracted you to the role of Jack
Scott?
What was really great about the role is
that Scott plays the school’s radio
DJ and when I was growing up I always
listened to the local Los Angeles radio
stations and so I always wanted to be
a radio DJ. When I read that he was a
radio DJ, I ? was really attracted to
the part.
How would you describe your role?
Scott is an interesting guy. He’s
not really the most popular guy, but he
doesn’t fit into either of the three
cliques. He is friends with everyone,
but he is not friends with anyone at the
same time.
Do you feel a connection to the overall
message of “High School Musical”?
It rings true for my high school experience.
Theater isn’t he coolest thing to
do when you are in high school, but you
have to do what you have to do and don’t
let people’s opinion’s stop
you from being yourself.
Are you excited to be back in Orange County?
It’s an incredible experience, because
when I was growing up I always went to
see shows at the Orange County Performing
Artscenter and I remember thinking to
myself that maybe one day I will have
the opportunity to perform on that stage.

Martha Cox
What made you audition for this role?
I was living in New York City and my nephews
were nine and five years old at the time
when I heard that they loved it. I auditioned,
I was called back and I got the part.
How would you describe “Martha Cox”?
She’s a brainiac. She’s supposed
to stay with all her friends and study
for the science decathlon, but in reality
hip hop is her passion. She’s a
serious student, but has this hidden side
to her when it comes to hip hop.
The moral of the HSM is that you don’t
have to stick to being what you are “supposed”
to be. Can you connect with that theme?
It’s interesting because in high
school, I definitely didn’t have
the same experience because I always performedm
yet I was also in the advanced placement
classes. There is no reason for any student
to have to stick to one thing.
You are an actress and you like the theater.
Are there any hidden sides to you?
I like to perform, but on the other hand,
I like photography and web design.
